Pigment Stains and Spots
Pigment spots may be present at birth or acquired over the years. In some cases, they become unsightly and require treatment. Several therapeutic modalities are available to treat skin pigmentation. A 100% effective treatment method without effects or complications would be ideal, but unfortunately, this perfect method does not exist. Photoaging is addressed in the skin rejuvenation section.
The pigment spots are effectively treated with the Medlite C6 laser.
Intense Pulsed Light devices
Chemical Peels can also be used to reduce them.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does it work?
The Medlite C6 laser with its noticeably short pulse duration (10 nanoseconds) targets melanosomes that contain melanin in the cells of the derm and epidermis; melanin is responsible for skin pigmentation. In pigment spots, the distribution of melanin is non-homogeneous, a little anarchic and in abnormal quantity. The treatment therefore targets melanin melanosomes that are contained in melanocytes and keratinocytes of our skin. The energy of the laser is absorbed by the melanin and there is destruction of the melanosome. The immune system then takes care of the cleaning.
Pulsed light also effectively treats pigment spots but is mainly used for lighter cases as part of photorejuvenation.
What types of pigment spots can be treated?
The following epidermal pigment lesions:
- Solar Lentigos
- Old age spots
- Freckles
- Café au lait stains and Mongolian spot (Medlite only)
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (variable results)
Melasma (variable results ranging from complete deletion to no response and sometimes an increase in melasma). Recurrences are frequent.
What are the possible side effects and complications?
With the laser the treated lesion will be darker and sometimes a small crust or bruise will be present at the treatment site. This will last from 7 to 14 days. There is a very slight risk of scarring or burning with this type of laser.
With intense pulsed light, the treated spots will be more apparent as a result of the treatment and the spots will gradually subside in the following weeks (2-3).
